"A" cards. Seen this short dozens of times over 30 years & I never understood that reference.

WWII fuel ration cards. Apparently an "A" card was the most restrictive. My mom told me stories about my great grand father being a rural postman during WWII. He didn't get a post office vehicle and had to use his own car. He had to jump through all kinds of hoops to get fuel and finding parts and tires was really tough.

1943, Seem like every cartoon and short was dedicated to the war effort.

f86 is correct. A card was for fuel rationing.

Pretty much. WB and Disney were basically bankrolled by the government at that point. Both made training films as well as shorts to entertain the troops.

Almost everything was war focused. Different than what we live today.
My parents were both Depression kids and my dad was in the Navy in May of '41. Mom was working for some defense contractor in Chicago. (but what company was not involved in defense then?) Different time for sure.

A lot of people today don't really understand what that war meant. Right now no one can really touch us. Sure they can hurt us physically (9/11) and economically, but we don't have much fear of invasion, enslavement or worse. In WWII Germany and Japan had every intention of whipping the allied nations out. You hear about some of the Germans plans for occupied Great Brittian and they were horrifying. Things like eradicating most of the men, keeping a selection of the women for breeding and stuff like that. Not to mention the atrocities committed in German occupied territories, China and Korea. The allies in 1942 were on the back foot and people were worried. It was serious, all out war. Scary stuff.
My grandfather was on the Yorktown and my grandmother built B-17s and B-29s for Boeing in Seattle.
